Script 4th Draft

The Divided
Gary Welsh
4th Draft

INT - Workshop - Afternoon
Fade In
Black screen, flickers to a view of a room. It's the creators workshop. We are looking through the eyes of Rob, a sentient robot and our protaganist. There's a heads-up display over-layed on the screen. A warning about backup power running low flashes on and off in one corner and the screen occasionally has a garbled flicker as he looks around the environment.

Six Character Bio

Physical Appearance
Large brutish looking robot. he has a disjointed face and a hunchback. Much lrger than any human. Close to around 7 ft.
Six is a crude construction. Built primarily for heavy lifting and to assist the creator and survivors in building the new settlement.
His body is constructed from rusted damaged salvaged metal plates. He is crudely built with only basic resemblance to humnan anatomy. His arms and legs are tubes with pistons powering them. He also has a compartment in his torso that allows easy access to his inner workings.

Rob Character Bio

Physical Appearance
Rob is a slim robot. Very much more human in build and scale than Six. He is slightly taller  than the creator maybe around 5'5 but not imposing or intimidating at all. Rob is technically better constructed than Six. Where Six is created from scrap and has rusted plates nailed on with pipes and tubes freely exposed, Rob is more streamlined efficent and built with slightly better salvage, although he does still have large areas of damaged metal plates where no other suitabel scrap could be found.
He should have a simple look about him. He should not look malicious at all. More innocent, newborn, inquisitive, curious. He also should not look cold or emotionless.
There should be a panel in his chest that can open easily for access to his inner workings and battery cell.

The Creator Character Bio

Physical Appearance
The Creator is an old human man, about 55-60 years old.  He should be fairly short, about 5ft.
He has white hair and can be balding at the top. He is often wearing techy safety goggles as he for the vast majority of his time is working on building things. He should be greasy and grimy and be quite unkempt in general due to his obsession with his work. He rarely places importance on something like hygiene, his work is too important.
One of his legs is damage from the crash. He has either salvaged some sort of existing medical leg brace or crafted on from spare parts himself.

Plot Summary

A chilling story about power, responsibility and justice set on a distant alien world in a dark, dystopian future. Rob, a robot built from scrap and salvage from a crashed ship is content with his life assisting in his creators work. Everything changes when his brother, Six begins to wonder about the nature of existence  life and death. Six embarks on a killing spree amongst survivors of their crashed ship. All that is left to Rob is to follow the trail of death and exact justice.

EXT. Open plains on a distant world

Dolly In
Establishing Shot

Aerial view of the plains. The plains are littered with rocks, sand and earth. In the distant background we can make out unusual, "alien" rock formations. At the top left of the shot we can see 5 much larger rocks protruding from the ground like fingers. In the centre of their grasp is a small town.

Dissolve To

Extreme Close Up

Track Up
VFX: Depth of Field focusing on the hand in the foreground

Close on a hand of a corpse. The arm leads back to the left of the screen where we can see part of the torso and barely make out a chin. The corpse is dressed in dirty worn clothing. The hand is covered in dirt or much.

VFX: Depth of Field shifts to the bird

Track Up

On the top of the corpse is a creature native to the planet. It's some sort of scavenging, scaly birdlike creature. The creature rears its head from snacking on the corpse lets out a screech and flies off. In the background we can see blurred by depth of field focus, the town and town sign.

VFX: Depth of Field shifts to focus on the background

We can see the town and sign clearly now. The sign reads "Welcome to New Eden". The sign looks very old and weather worn.

Dissolve To
Medium Shot

Dolly In

The start of the town main street. It curves round to the right so that we can't yet see the end of the street. It looks deserted. There are traces of damage. Broken windows, buildings and flickering lights.

Dissolve To
Medium Shot

Track Left to Right

View of one of the buildings in the street. Something horrible has quite obviously happened here. The window is smashed, there are blast marks on the sides of the building. One of the doors is damaged and the other slides back and forth relentlessly, jammed and prevented from closing by the other mishapen door and the leg of a human body protruding through the gap. There's blood around where the body lies.

Further along the shot we can see another dead body barely as an arm hangs over the edge of a roof, blood dripping down the wall from under it.

Dissolve To
Long Shot

Dolly In

The salloon. As with all the other buildings, the lights are flickering and it has damage from weapons discharge on the walls. Some of the windows are broken and there is blood on the walls and a couple of corpses draped around.

Dissolve To

Meduim Shot

Dolly In

Closer on the salloon door. One of the door windows is broken. Its dark inside. Too Dark to see any detail. just a murky blue from some small interior lights and the night sky

Dissolve To

INT Salloon

Inside the salloon. There are a few flickering lights. It's very dusty and dark, with only the small light from the flickering and faint blue light from through the windows. It's very ominouisly lit.

Long Shot

Dolly In

Shadowy figure sits on the stage in the centre of the shot. The camera moves towards him.

Dissolve To

Close Up

Dolly In

Closeup on the figure now. We can see from some light gleaming off the body between patches of rust and the general shape that its not a human but a large hulking robotic figure. The head turns up slowly then the eyes flick to life suddenly.

=========

The film opens on an establishing shot of a small, isolated town in the middle of a
barren wasteland. Around the town, large finger shaped rocks protrude from the ground.
We slow dissolve to a closer view of the town. In  the forground an alien bird looking
scavenger tears flesh from a rotting corpse. The focus shifts to the background as the
creature flies off. We can see some details in the buildings that make it clear that
these buildings of the future are damaged. Smoke and flickering neon lights grab our
attention. We dissolve forward moving through the town. At each dissolve we beging to
see what looks like a trail of carnage. Corpses and weapons damage lead the eye to a
large building at the end of the "street". The camera continues to move forward through
a broken window at the door of the large building. Inside there is no light save what
comes from the moon through some windows. at a stage beyond a run down damaged bar we can see a large hulking shape. It looks like a man sitting but larger. As we move closer
we can see its made of scrap rusted bits of metal. The eyes flicker to life and the head
moves up to look us in the eye.
